Institution Slang
I used to work a a CCA joint that held Tennessee Dept. of Correction I/M's. We used TDOC Policy. We also used TDOC slang. I now work for the BOP. Some diffrences.....
TDOC BOP ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Home made intoxicant= Julliup . "Hooch" Callin in sick= Callin in sick . "Banging in" Janitor that cleans up area="Rock-Man" "Orderlies" Place where you put A-holes and cowards= Segregation or H.S.A. (High Security Area) "SHU" (Special Housing Unit) Lieutenant= "Lieutenant" "Lou" Or L.T. (My first few weeks, I thought every Lieutenant's name was "Lou") Prison made knife="shank" "Shank" (universal I guess) Inmate general store="Canteen" "Commissary" Staff personal alarm="Man-Down Alarm" "Body Alarm" Enclosed areas for I/M movement= "Hallways" "Corridors" Locking or sliding gates="Crash Gates" "Grills" Inmate incident reports= "write-up" "Shot" 1st shift, 2nd shift, 3rd shift..... "Day watch,Evening Watch, Morning Watch" Thats all I can think of right now..........anyone else?

Re: Institution Slang
We at the BOP also use plain language on the radio. This is because we dont want to seem rude to the inmates, and we want them to know everything that is going on at all times.

Re: Institution Slang
Either that, or we're simply too incompetent to learn ten codes.
When I worked for Oklahoma DOC: There were no secrets in prison because "The walls have ears." An inmate or staff member who can't take the pressure is a "Catchout." A staff member or inmate who defects to the other side is a "Turnout." "Holding your mud" is the ability to take pressure with out catching out or becoming a Turnout. "Zoo Zoos & Wham Whams" you purchase at the Canteen.
