Missouri and BOP
I currently work for Missouri and have a lot of problems with the department. The defensive tactics we learn are ancient. The training I received in the academy is sub par, and the department decided to take all of the glocks out of our vehicle patrol cars on Aug 1 for liability reasons. That just leaves a shotgun. This department seems that cares more about the inmates than officers safety. Is this a common problem throughout the US? Does the BOP have these problems?

Re: Missouri and BOP
The vehicles and towers are well armed. As for defensive tactics, whats that? The only thing the BoP will teach you is how to let the force pass, then run like hell. Thats it. But you will learn the most up to date and advanced levels of how to kiss inmate ass. If your all about high speed training and thump therapy for inmates I guarantee your state provides better then the BoP. Now if its a nice pay check and retirement we're your place.

Re: Missouri and BOP
Yup the BOP Teaches the NIKE defense. SWOOSH, RUN ! Thats about the best of it. They actually taught some decent stuff when I first hired on with them, but now they wont let them teach it. Additionally self defense is really not that effective if you only practice it three hours a year and that is during your annual refresher training after the class on RETHERM FEEDING. Yea we watch that great video EVERY STINKING YEAR !!

Yeah starting pay for missouri is around 28k which sucks. The retirement for missouri is pretty good. If you stay there long enough you can retire with about 60% of your salary a year and a check for 100k

Sure the DT isn't going to win you any contests, but I sure feel better at least knowing that I have had SOMETHING and understand some concepts about protecting myself. If you are not happy with MO, it is unlikely you will be happy anywehre else. Just making more money. Anyhow, I'm feeling a bit more on the bitchy side than normal so forgive me if I jump too fast! lol |

No matter where you go there are going to be deficiencies in either training, equipment, or policies. While our payscale is well above average ------our equipment sucks, I would love to know what a Patrol Vehicle even looks like. The couple institutions that have perimeter vehicles...................do so unarmed. NONE of our vehicles have lights or sirens. Our current director is a business manager. His entire career has been in Iowa Corrections but he was an institutional business manager before becoming Deputy Director-Management and then becoming director. Would anyone out there like to guess where his emphisis is?????????? Oh yea...............I just went to my first DT class since I took one at the basic academy.......................................I'll retire in 17 months with 27 yrs in the bag. They kinda forgot about doing any re-certs over the years. Guns----------------we JUST transitions from S&W 686's to S&W M&P's last year and from Mini 14's to AR-15's The armorer refuses to keep any full magazines for the M&P's becasue he thinks the springs will get weak..................................there are not even any "emergency" magazines.............if something goes down.......we will have to load up before we go...................... Our retirement is 72% after 30 yrs or 60% after 22 yrs and age 55. It goes up 1.5% per yr between 22 yrs and 30 yrs Iowa gets a LOT of transplants from Missouri due to the pay. In the last 5 yrs or so I know of at least 5 that ended up returning to Missouri..................They found out that the grass wasn't any greener up here in the north country.
