War stories/Escape attempts

Due to all the recent escape attempts, I thought I would start this thread by sharing one and hope others would chime in with their own.
While working at a Max prison in KS (HCF) in 1994 we had a pretty good one. Lower security inmates who were housed there were allowed to rec in front of the faciity but still inside the walls, outside in other words. It was really nice, picnic tables, a little pond with ducks, manicured lawn, much like a mini-city park. A thug has his wife/sister or whatever secrete a dress and wig under her clothes and when not observed drop it into the the lttle pond with ducks. At some point the thug retrieves and dons the dress and wig and simply walks past 3 CO's working visitation, 3 tower COs with partial views (one being myself), 1 CO working the main entrance, and numerous prison staff entering and exiting the facility. With all the beautiful women in Kansas I still cant believe there's enough ugly ones for this thug to blend in like he did. I mean this was not a pretty sight. The kicker is, he had on prison issued foot wear.
He was captured several days later, well dressed, sipping cocktails, and smoking expensive cigars on a beach in SoCaL.

"All the beautiful women in Kansas!" Captain, please.

Captain Hadley, do you happen to remember The Birdman of El Reno?

Leavenworth is only a stone's throw from Missouri. Some of it's bound to rub off.

By Birdman are you talking about Dirty Red and his crew with their foiled hang gliding caper? I always thought the best thing we could have done is let him succeed and jump from the water tower to his eminent demise. BTW nice crawfish on the KS ladies comment.

Always a pleasure Captain.

Yes, I'm referring to ol' "Red." While Red was in Heavenworth after the Great Glider Escape, he and I talked about it. He claims that the FBI test flew the thing and it actually went airborne. Linda B. told me that one of his hangliders was still in the El Reno SIS office and to tell Red that he could claim it when he finshied his sentence and they will probably let him have it. Take it home ya know. Fly around the neighborhood.

Then there was the one from my days at the Shank. Thug by the name of Dufresne burrowed out and ran off to Hollywood where he changed his name to Robbins and became a tree-huggin socialist. I knew he should of had that accident when I had him on the roof for a work detail.
