Inmate killed during prisoner uprising at B.C. prison

AGASSIZ, B.C. -- A convicted child pornographer is dead after what officials call a disturbance at Mountain Institution in Agassiz, B.C. Saturday night.

Corrections Canada spokesman Dave Lefebvre said Sunday that the incident began in the prison's gym before 10 Saturday night with some inmates breaking windows.

Dead is 39-year-old Michael Andrew Gibbon, who was serving a sentence for sexual offences.

Lefebvre said it's unclear if Gibbon was attacked or was simply caught up randomly in the violence.

One other inmate was injured in the incident. No staff members were injured.

The prison was in lockdown Sunday.

Mountain Institution is a medium security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada.

It houses almost 500 federally sentenced male inmates.

The disturbance was being investigated by Corrections Canada staff while Gibbon's death is being looked at by the RCMP Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Gibbon was arrested in March 1997 for his activities in what became known as the 'Bridal Falls Pornography Operation.'

Police seized 53 rolls of undeveloped film, three video-cassette recorders, computer equipment, more than 400 videotapes, 15 CD-ROMs and 41 floppy disks.

Actually, there have been some articles to come out since, and it turns out it was a full fledged riot. They came about that close to losing the institution. It's amazing to staff were hurt.

Sounds like they did what they needed to do for self-preservation until more staff arrived.

I can't say I care for child pornographers. Perhaps the riot was a ruse to get him off the count. I'm just glad no staff got hurt, and were able to stay safe until back up got there.
