Re: Correctional Officers and LEO

Can't we all just get along? Street cops ARE underpaid, but they have no one to blame but themselves for choosing that profession. That's a like a vet bitching that a plastic surgeon makes more money than him. Two different jobs, but both being medical in nature. Again, prison officers ARE LEOs and so are street cops. Two different jobs, but both are considered LEO.

I do wish that we in the BOP could have badges though. I know we're allowed to carry our personal weapons concealed in all 50 States and in all US territories without a permit. Our ID cards give us the credentials for that. Some law Bush signed into office after 9/11. He actually did do some things right!

CO's now what signs to look for when things are going to "pop" off. CO's know how to talk down a crazy person. And most of all a CO knows how to get busy WITHOUT a weapon.
I read an artical a year or so ago that backs up what you are saying here. It stated "many police departments are finding that the best patrol officers they have, started in corrections" (unknown, 2006). The point is COs know how to talk to people, and they can read people ans are likely to know when things are fixing to go bad. In addition to this, that is why many Sheriffs departments (like LA) are hiring people, sending them to the academy and making them start in corrections.

Re: Correctional Officers and LEO

It blows my mind that Police could think so poorly of us. They go out and find the worse of the worse, then they send them all to us, and we are tasked and expected to keep the peace. I am new to the BOP, but worked as a Marine Corps MP, deputy sherrif, and state corrections officer in Ohio. When I went state corrections several deputies, and State troopers I know said I was crazy. They said they couldn't pay them enough to step behind the fences, with that many criminals. So at least in Ohio C.O.s got the props. However we were not considered LEO's.

Re: Correctional Officers and LEO

Who really cares? Do what you do and go by what the paperwork states. Mine in the BOP states I am a LEO as well as a Federal Officer. I earn Federal Law Enforcement pay, I'm on the Federal Law Enforcement pay scale, and I'm earning a Federal Law Enforcement retirement, just the same as the US Marshals, FBI, ATF, DEA, Etc. Why would I care what some podunk city, county, state cop thinks about me? Seems he's below that level that I'm at. Sure, he can write me a traffic ticket (better have a reason), or arrest me (better have a reason), but only when he's on official duty and within the scope of his employment.

I can't do what the ATF does, nor can he, I can't do what the US Marshalls do, nor can the ATF or him or me, I can't do what the FBI does, nor can the US Marshalls, ATF, or him, or me, and on and on and on. They are all different jobs, different terms of employment, and tasked with different aspects of something we ALL like to call "LAW ENFORCEMENT".

A street cop who thinks that he or she is the ONLY law is only fooling themselves and you if you buy into it. I'd like to see one of them come onto Federal property and try to come into an institution with their gun or handcuffs. LOL! Basically, their authority ends at the road where my Institutions drive-way meets that road. They are out of jurisdiction then.

GIVE ME SHAKEDOWNSHORTI AND A LITTLE FURBY AND WE'D HAVE HAD THE ******* FOURPOINTED IN 8 SEC. WE'D GIVE ANOTHER MEANING TO PBR (PRISON BULL RIDING). WHEN THE ****ER WAKES UP WE'D GET THE LAST LAUGH TELLING HIM HE GOT HIS ASS WHIPPED BY TWO GIRLS AND AN OLD CRUSTY ****ER.
The way I look at it, LAPD had their methods, and that was what they used. Of course, correctional officers look at things like this a little differently, especially if they are used to doing as much as necessary with a only a little help, if that's all who is available for an emergency response. Heck, I know people who would have picked him up and body slammed him down to the ground, 'cuffed him and stuffed him in a cell, with a minimum of fuss.

"95B CORRECTIONS" I thought that was 95C, with 95B being outside the fence.
