Re: Maricopa Sheriffs
My little Brother lives in that area, don't know much about working there but he says that most of the voters love Sheriff Joe and that dude will keep his job as long as HE wants it! I think all us other jails could learn a few things from them. I heard that he spends more a day to feed his K-9's than he does to feed the inmates!!! That's great... I'd vote for him too!

Its great to hear it straight from the horses mouth.....Like I have said in an earlier post....I have read posts from one guy on another LE forum who apparently had a hard time with something in that department (I think it had to do with time off/workers comp, a law suit or something, which most departments are the same when it comes to that, RED TAPE)....anyway, he doesn't work there anymore and talks trash about it all the time on that board any time someone posts anything about MCSO....its nice to hear the other side of the story...usually when you hear bad things about a department/facility it is from the disgruntled employees anyway.....not the ones trying to make it work....thank you.....

Re: Maricopa Sheriffs
Arpaio definitely has his little kingdom set up, and uses the power of the sheriff's office to protect it.
Arpaio's thugs threaten to arrest a New Times reporter for looking at public records Wed Jun 11, 2008 at 09:30:16 PM By Ray Stern How close did I come to getting arrested by Maricopa County sheriff's deputies today? As Maxwell Smart would say, "Missed it by that much." The problem: I had the nerve to want to look at the same public records that sheriff's deputies were scouring at the City of Phoenix public records counter. Just watched a documentry on "america's toughest jail" Not what I would consider exactly flattering. In fact they played off a relationship between co and an inmate as no big deal

Re: Maricopa Sheriffs
Sorry it took me so long to respond here is one link you can read about Joe
Sheriff Joe Arpaio Maricopa County I also attached a letter from a prominant Attorney about Joe read it and form your own opinion. He's a media whore and way too tough on crime. And no I am not a CO, nor am I a felon, I have been married 10 years to a man who is an addict and is in prison. So I am a wife of an inmate, who happens to be doing time in AZDOC.....I have experienced many things through this ordeal. I joined this site to get perspective from the other side of the fence so to speak. So I guess you could say that I am in love with an inmate, not an inmate lover. Most of these guys need to be locked up, but as far as I am concerned from what I have read about Joe and his possie I can't stand the man, or his "lock 'em all up and throw away the key" mentality. Thanks to the WAR ON DRUGS, mandatory sentencing with 85% of the men in prison on drug related crimes....I see that this mentality is creating a financial disaster. The prisons/jails are over crowded, under funded and under staffed!! The State can ill afford the attitudes and power games of the likes of Thomas and Arpaio and legislators who base their campaigns on "get tough" crime fighting policies. Since 1977 these people and their predecessors such as Corbin, Twist, Collins, and a long line of Republican legislators have managed to revise the State's criminal code almost annually with the final result of increasing admissions to our state's prisons by more than 300% and increasing the monthly inmate growth from 30 per month to more than 100 per month. Folks, that translates into a need for 3 new 850-bed prisons every 2 years. And for those of you who care about such things as costs, that means we allocate approximately $70,125,000 per year, ad infinitum, for prison bed construction. Then, at an average cost of $59 per day per inmate to operate these behemoths, we can add an additional $27+ million per year for ever and ever and ever. Next, because we must further satisfy the get tough politicians and the self righteous and the just plain ignorant to make them feel good that they are punishing these equally ignorant inmates, we strip away funds for any possibility of rehabilitative programming while they are in prison and then make it nearly impossible for a released inmate to get and keep a legitimate job that pays a liveable wage. God we're good. Well, my high-IQ fellow Arizonans, this all translates into 70% increase in recidivism since 1977 (I do not buy the ADC statistics on this score which would be more like a 50% increase over the same time period) which means that more than half of inmates entering our prison system have been convicted of a previous crime. And this to me is a direct result of our failure to address the truth about the kinds of treatment and supervision that works and what doesn't work. And lastly, for all of you who so anxiously spent our tax dollars (and I am talking about you two-faced fiscal conservatives), have you managed to reduce the crime rate in this state? Do we (or even you) feel safer than you did in 1977? So I have cited my statement....I am am not trying to create waves by any means....there are "stand up guys" in prison they are not all thugs! My husband happens to be a wonderful man that needs rehab maybe but not prison, he's a father, a hard worker, a wonderful provider (when home LOL!!) and a man of faith. I have been treated like sh!t by some CO's and have been treated with respect by most. I hope that I clarified myself here and at least give you an idea of who I am and why I am here. I hope that I am welcome here since I welcome CO's to the "prison forums" that I belong to. Here is another article that came out recently about the AZ Budget so maybe you might rethink working in AZ, you might not even get a PAYCHECK!! Let's not forget that a lot of these inmates are unsentenced inmates. They have NOT been found guilty. If you were wrongly accused of a crime, and couldn't bail out, would you want to be treated worse than a dog? I don't think you would. Prison's are not for punishment in addition to be locked away from socieity, isn't that punishment enough? And, actually your statement about Joe and the AZ voters....The New Times and other media is finally exposing his "sickness and perversion" and I believe that the AZ voters are seeing that we are spending more money on paying billions of dollars in lawsuits against him, that his so called "saving money by feeding the inmates twice a day green bologna" tactics....it's a farce. He's a joke and we need a better person to do the job. It's ignorant people who don't get the facts before they vote that keeps that man working. He will stand down and I hope sooner rather than later. |

Re: Maricopa Sheriffs
AZDOCVISTOR, I don't think your going to find an understanding sympathic crowd here. If all the jails and prisons were run by people like that sheriff, I would bet the population of prison inmates would not be near as high as it is today.
