Re: Alaska...

Why? How many COs are there in Alaska? How many people are there in Alaska?

Congratulations. You are now the official PO.Org Emissary to Alaska COs. It's your job to build PO.Org membership among Alaska COs.

Good luck.

Re: Alaska...

From what I've read, there are about 750-800 CO's in Alaska. The population up here is about 670,000. We all live in igloos and ride polar bears, caribou and moose to work. We drive dog sleds pulled by husky's or wolves and wear furs to keep warm. I killed a whale last year and our whole village has been eating it for a long time. We have to drink moose milk because cows can't survive the cold and the mail takes about 6 months to get up here.

Kidding

We have a house and cars and Walmart, Target, Sears, JCPenney's.... even COWS! haha

It can get up to 90 in the summer, but it's usually around 70. Also- in the summer we have daylight about 22 hours a day. Here's some more TRUE facts: in the dead of winter it can get to -60 degrees. Kids still have to go to school and wait at the bus stop until it's -50. (that's NEGATIVE 50-- as in, below zero) In the winter, it's dark from about 4pm until about 10am.

Alaska leads the nation in domestic violence and has the highest population of sex offenders/child molesters in the country per capita.

Every resident (living here over 1 year with the intent to stay in AK) even newborn babies receive a check in October for oil revenues from the government- it averages about $1500 but this year it's supposed to be over $2000. They direct deposit it into your account and you have to pay about $60 of it back to taxes. It's called the AK Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) and PFD day is like Black Friday in all the stores around here. (car dealerships even let you spend it before you get it)

It's May 5th today and about 65 degrees outside and sunny. I'm wearing flip flops and tee shirts from about April-October.

We have real Eskimos (called Natives) that live in villages all around the state that are mostly accessible by small commuter planes. A lot of them use four-wheelers to get around and a box of cereal can cost about $10 in the villages. Most villages are dry because of the pattern of alcohol abuse. Native Alaskans receive free health care and monthly dividend payments from the native corporations. Most of the panhandlers in Anchorage are native.

Juneau is the capitol, but is not accessible by road. Anchorage is the hub of the state with the largest population with about 260,000 people.

Close to 4,400 inmates are under Alaska jurisdiction, but there isn't enough room in our jails so some are shipped off to Red Rock in Arizona. There are 12 facilities up here.

Re: Alaska...

Good.

Now get to work on those remaining 748 to 798 Alaska COs. If you can get them all to join that will almost double our membership.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Good luck.

No fair you make me want to move back up to Alaska. I was up in Barrow in the summer of 2006 and loved it. What is the academy like for CO's in Alaska?

I'll be back up there soon. Not sure how soon, but I figure within a year or two. I've wanted to go back ever since I left in '99 lol. Been back a few times to visit, but one of these days it will be for good. I miss it

I'm not sure... I haven't been yet! They give you 14 months to complete it because it's SO full-- I'm looking at about 11 months before I can get a spot. I'll just work until they have an opening. You can check out more info on http://www.alaskacorrections.com
