Re: Alaska...

True facts continued: When it gets to -60 below you can take a hot cup a water (coffee works too) and tip the cup over, the fluid will vanish before it hits the ground. Your car tires will freeze solid at this temperature causing your tires to feel like your riding on squares...at least for a few miles. AND the best fact is...the roads are empty because most cars won't start!! haha, love it (cause mine does).

Alaska has nearly double the offenders then the next leading state, and this is due to them running up here because this state isn't hard on felons as far as employment and privacy.

The dividend you receive in Alaska doesn't make up for living in one of the most expensive States to live in (Including having three cities ranking among the highest 10 expensive cities to live in). But it sure helps buy that big a$$ hdtv!

At 40 below Alaskans run outside to brush of the foot of snow on their cars from last night...In their shorts, t-shirt and flip flops!! At this temperature it's nice to have an indoor job, like working in Alaska DOC, but you don't have yard out for the Inmates.

I'm a "real" Tanana Athabascan Indian(mix) and I'm considered "Native" just like the Aleuts, some Russians and the "popular" Eskimos. If you come to Alaska don't bring any prejudices on the Natives (Or any race for that matter), and yes like any other race we have our misguided. Should you have the opportunity to learn part of a new culture, take it.

Alaska has more pilots and small planes then you can shake a stick at, and it's really cool flying over the Alaska Range, opportunities like this are always available and at a fair cost. If you think paying $4 a gallon for unleaded is bad, in McGrath, Alaska you'll pay more then $12 a gallon (More then Japan pays!).
Alaskan Natives get free health care to a point, Cancer for example isn't covered. But just like Canada free health care you get what you pay for. Fortunately Alaska DOC has a really good health care plan!!!

Also, in Alaska DOC if you work anywhere other then Anchorage, you'll end up running into released inmates often, we have a small world of our own.

And for some weird reason most people who leave Alaska seeking four season warmth end up coming back to Alaska... Must be something?

Women's Sufferage is only 78 years old. That is hardly enough time to realise that we have to be taken seriously by women.

We come back because it is to hot down here in the lower 48. After spending time in Barrow I found I can not stand it when it gets above 65*. Once it hits that temperature I am wanting the AC to be turned on.

And the AC doesn't work worth a damned at 65 degrees, leaving you in a bad way.

Re: Alaska...

Having lived the last two years of my life 22 miles east of Fairbanks, I've learned quite a bit about being cold. Nothing tops performing hot-pit refueling (refueling while the pilot's in the seat and the engine is running) on F-16s at down to -40 degrees outside. Standing outside next to the airflow from all of the running aircraft drops the air temperature even more. Bio came out and did a study on it, but didn't stay out long enough to finish the results. And, of course, when you call weather for an ambient temperature to begin the hot-pit process... they'll reply "-39 and holding". However, the summers more than make up for it. If you like the sun up continuously and no air conditioning. Rant off.
