Alabama prison officials plan to pay tribute next week to a correctional officer on the 20th anniversary of his slaying death in the prison that now bears his name.

Alabama Corrections Commissioner Richard Allen will speak at the Tuesday service in honor of William E. Donaldson, who was killed at what was then the West Jefferson Correctional Facility on Jan. 12, 1990. The maximum-security prison was renamed the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in 1991.

The Alabama Department of Corrections is holding the service, along with the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation. It will begin at 10 a.m. at the prison.http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...ys/th1jump.gif

Donaldson was stabbed to death shortly after he and another officer had been escorting a nurse delivering medication to inmates. According to reports at the time, inmate Patrick Carr threw a cup of coffee at Donaldson. As Donaldson started to enter Carr's cell, he was stabbed in the chest as the other officer shoved the nurse aside, the reports stated.

Carr, who earlier had been convicted in the 1985 shooting death of Fairfield Police Officer Myron Massey, was tried and sentenced to death for Donaldson's killing. In 1994, he hung himself in his Death Row cell.
