Our campers are in the front lobby all day. They see staff going in and out, getting screened constantly. They probably no the procedures better than we do.
If you are the staff getting searched, tell the inmates to leave, don't rely on the lobby officer. I will hold up the line until the lobby is clear. Also, I don't remember who, but someone was saying they are darn near stripped when they go through, WHY? Leave your stuff on, go through the detector, when it beeps, get the hand-held, and tell them it is your watch, belt and boots. It should be easy to clear it then.

Here is an interesting question, can you request to have a union rep present during this search? Yes. What is the lobby officer is the union rep? Does this present a conflict of interest?

Re: BOP Electronic Searches

You most definitely are entitled to a union rep. when you or your property are searched.
And if you let them get away with searching you without a rep. long enough, it will make it so easy on management that they will never repair the x-ray machines when they break.

This will then lead dirty staff into making "safes" in their lunch boxes etc. to smuggle contraband.

BOP managers are their own worst enemies unless they are kept in check by union officials...

ABSOLUTELY, I totally agree with you. The BOP needs to work with the union and set up a policy. The problem is the BOP set up the system without the unions' consent. Now you have a whatever goes policy on almost anything and everything becomes a fight. It is crazy! Now if this was an inmate issue the matter would have been put in policy in triplicate. Folks this is our 4th admendment rights and yes we work at prison but we still have rights and should have a bit more than inmates. Totally cool about being searched as long as it is done right and as of now it is not. The BOP took upon itself to institute this without the consent of the union and now we have a loose cannon. Too many times we are making this system work by coming in early to get screened to get to our posts on time. Yes many people are doing it instead of coming in on time and collecting overtime while they screen us. Why? All about looking for that next promotion. Our local supplement says we draw equipment from control at our start time so why am I being told by and Lt., contradicting policy, that I must be on post at that time. Because some weak COs would do as he instructed. So if we draw equipment from control at our start time how about the time it takes to screen. That has not been negotiated! What!

Re: BOP Electronic Searches

What's even more beautiful, at Leavenworth we had an x-ray to check inmate's stuff with. It was big enough that you could run large items through it, like mattresses. It broke and there was no money to fix it.

But... But, there was money to buy a much smaller x-ray, one that's big enough for lunchboxes & such; and put it in the sallyport to search staff with.

It's The BOP Way...

Lord knows we got to make these searches on staff everyday or else! But ion scanners are really a bummer to the public who wants to visit, test positive for drugs and can not visit, and then they write letters. Letters are bad. Goodbye ion scanners. I guess if you do things loosey goosey with your employees who cares right? What are they going to write letters..nope just complain...too bad for them.
