That is a little confusing. First, national poliocy spells out that staff are to conduct 30 minute irregular rounds. Writing an entry that states rounds were made throughout the entire shift does not comply with policy. If you had a suicide, the log entries would never protect that officer. Second, the Captain or higher is the only one that can write an SIL on a Lt. A SIL is part of the evaluation process. The last time I checked, officers do not do Lt's evaluations.

They have cameras in Lompoc SHU and have used that against at least 1 officer I know of...had a suicide on his watch and they pulled the tape, noting his failure to make his rounds..

Great info all...We were counting rounds made by others as long as they checked every cell. I guess I'll go about it a little different. Thanks

Exactly. That's why I posted it. Some joints place the 30 minute check log on the cell door and whoever visits it signs for the check regardless of where they are assigned.

Harley says that's a No-Go.

You are absolutely correct, I misspoke, I wrote up the SIL entry and handed it to the captain for him to give it to the Lt. Basically, it was you write up mine, and I am going to write up yours. And for informational purposes, the officer did make his rounds every 30 minutes that shift, the captain checked the digital recordings, he only made the one entry at the end of his shift detailing that he had made rounds throughout his shift. And you are also correct about writing down each round made, it can also be referenced in the correctional services manual.

Re: 30 Minute Checks In SHU

Right now in the SHU were I work we count rounds the Warden ,Medical and other departemts make as 30 minute check per the SHU Lt. Now that the retard Lappin has said thats a no go the union should do something about this because in the BOP I hear over and over we all are correctional workers first , So if thats so then the SHU Officers should not be the only ones making 30 minutes checks in the log books.

Go to that Sallyport page, print it and give it to your SHU LT. Tell him that he is setting you and himself up for failure.

So don't give him ammo to do it with. Show him Harley's interpretation of policy and make sure that SHU staff are doing the checks.

If he wants to be stupid, file a grievance and attach a copy of Harley's interpretation to it. Make the Warden deal with the issue by at least responding to the grievance. Then you will have something in writing from your own administration.

Okie has a good point. CYA, CYA, CYA. it cant come back on you if you have covered yourself, with policy.
