CCA lobbying
Corrections Corp. Spends $2.5M to Lobby
Feb 20 2008 10:46AM EST Corrections Corp. of America spent almost $2.5 million in 2007 to lobby on legislation and regulations related to the private prison industry. The prison management company spent more than $1.1 million in the second half of 2007 to lobby the federal government, according to a disclosure form posted online Thursday by the Senate's public records office. The company lobbied on the privatization of Bureau of Indian Affairs prisons and on the Public Safety Act, which would outlaw private prisons, as well as the Private Prison Information Act, which would force private prisons to make public the same information government jails must provide. Corrections Corp. spent more than $1.3 million in the first six months of 2007 to lobby on similar issues. In addition to lobbying Congress, the company also lobbied the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Department of Labor and Office of Management and Budget. Corrections Corp. lobbyists included Bart VerHulst, previously chief of staff for former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.; Mike Quinlan, former director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons; and Gus Puryear, previously counsel to Frist and an adviser to Vice President **** Cheney. Lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches, under a federal law enacted in 1995. Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. Re: CCA lobbying
Screw those guys. A law forbidding private prisons should be enacted and this trend of privatising government functions should come to an end.

Re: CCA lobbying
We had one guy come from CCA who was a real piece of work. He'd been a lieutenant at the private joint, and made twice as much money when he became a GS-6 CO in the BOP.

Re: CCA lobbying
Let CCA run our joints, and we can supervise them, as they supervise the inmates, LOLOL. My real opinion is, if you want to know the cost of fixing and retaking a joint, let CCA run it for a while, you will have your answer in a matter of time.

Re: CCA lobbying
Have any of you actually worked for CCA. I know for fact that we recieve better training than you.We don't have to deal with all of the politics you guys constantly cry about on the forums.Instead of constantly bashing one another on the fourms we should treat each other as officers. Regardless of who I worked for If I was touring your prison and somthing went down I'd be fighting right beside you brother.

No, I don't want privatisation of my facility. Should it happen, CCA, (or any others for that matter), I fear would loose the HI/MAX facilities, and there has been things on record regarding that. I'll go to work for California and put up with their economy before doing that, or New York. |

=====> That's OK. When I was at CCA, we got tired of all the State dicks who came to us thinking they had all the answers. Their answer to everything was to kick start the inmates - and then wonder why they got assaulted. Guess the extra $5,000 (before OT) we were paid vs. AZ State (top pay after 8 years) made us seem suddenly better? I just went to AZ DOC after years of working for another state DOC, and CCA. Why? Because of all the crap that private officers catch, even though we deal with the same type of inmates, w/o spray or cuffs or batons. Other than that, I'd still be with CCA. |

Re: CCA lobbying
Why do all the private facility guys always bring up the "we do the same job, but without any spray, cuffs, batons, etc." line? Do you have any idea how many states and local agencies do the same? Quit whining. We don't like private prisons, but have no problems with private prison CO's.

=====> Yes, I know. I used to work there (VT). Other than the feds, I haven't seen any agency yet besides VT that doesn't give their staff something. I'm not whining - it just [u]sounds[u] that way! :-) As a VT CO, you know how to deal with inmates; same with CCA. All inmates are the same (OK, the Surenos are a bit worse with their 6-on-1 mentality). Be glad you're still in VT. CCA pays quite a bit more (if you're at a Fed. contract facility), but the benefits are sooo much better (you just don't realize it until you go elsewhere). |
