I'm not going to pick on you......but let me ask you this....... I'm Union, and you are NON-union.......we both work in the same state..... I make 31+ per hour, 104 hours sick leave per year, 5 weeks vacation per year, MY choice of overtime or comp. time when I work extra, my medical is 90 bucks a month & dental is 14 bucks a month, plus I have senority for all jobs, and a compressed work schedule. So THAT is why I complain about crap that should not be happening......that is what a union does. Otherwise we would be in the same boat as the state DOC......and I would just be going to my job everyday not knowing any better..........

Re: Weak local.
I just read through this entire thread and I see some things never change. I joined the Union on March 18, 1974 when I started at Leavenworth. I never served in any official role with the local, but did assist as much as I could. When I transferred to Marion, I left my membership at LVN, but continued to help Marion's local when I could. When I transferred to SEA, I moved my membership there. What a treat!!! I got to work side by side with a retiree who had been one of the founders, waaaaaayyyyy back when the Union was first organized. Seagoville's local was beyond poor, specifically it was losing one cent, per member, per month. So I put on the black hat and lobbied for and ultimately got the local dues increased. I did attend conventions, but always paid for everything out of my own pocket. Hey SEALOM, I hope Seagoville's local is doing well these days.
When I was selected for an instructor position at Glynco, I left my membership with Seagoville. When I got to the Academy, I saw a note on the bulletin board that said any instructors on dues check off needed to stop their dues. So, I was mentioning this to my supervisor and said, "I never thought I would have made it to management". He asked me what I was talking about and I pointed out the note on the bulletin board. He then told me I wasn't management. I responded that then I'm still bargaining unit and he told me no. I told him it had to be one of the other. Long story short, I organized Glynco not long after that. My two cents on the entire labor management issue: Educate yourself as to the Master and local supplemental! Get involved! Be professional, and as someone commented way back in this thread, always remember it's not personal, it's just business. |

Re: Weak local.
Also, if a union member points something out to a steward, vice-president or president, it is normally not done to embarass anyone, it is business. Most times the activists get in their feelings when you point out something they missed or a bad decision they made. As a former vice-president, I often find times when I am telling current activists about alternate ways to perform their duties, and it never fails, I get the "Don't tell me how to do my job", "I know what I am doing", and my personal favorite, "You are not on the e-board any, so quit trying to do union work". People need to understand that when people offer advice, you should take it, albeit with a grain of salt, but take it graciously none the less. Activists constantly complain they do not have enough members helping out, and with the "warm" reception we are given when we try, it is no wonder the members don't want to help!

Re: Weak local.
The best advise I can give on this issue as a former President of Local 1242 and current Chief Steward is fight. Stand up in open forums to management. Once this is done keep yourself visible and not only will staff support you but managers who believe you are fighting a good cause will often email you, and provide you with evidence that data requests can not get. You must also find other locals you can learn from. Keep your RVP on the line. If He/She is weak get someone else. It takes one ggod battle to change tides. We have experienced a large increase in participation because of the current issues we have pending. (Unicor-pending, Portal to Portal-WON, Compressed schedules-pending, ets)
