I haven't seen any of the settlement agreement on this one. Sounds rather screwed up if you ask me. I hope Cecil Howard wasn't involved in this one. He would know better. I know Cecil well. Better yet, where was Dan Bethea or Eric Young's opinion on this one. I would like to see the facts before I would finger point.
Well, from what I am told, his signature is on the settlement papers. You be the judge, ask him for yourself.

Now I remember why this is so silly. Couldnt remember if it was in the Master Agreement. Employees have a choice - not the agency or the union. It is non-negotiable.

This violates the law. All it would take is one employee to mention this, and the deal is off of the table. This aint over - or at least it shouldnt be.

Re: Weak local.

Any agreement that violates Title 5 is void and meaningless, no matter whose signature is on it.

At long last we have a strong union. Our last chairman was in the Governors pocket and he shafted us but there was no-one to replace him. He has been replaced and we are already seeing the benefits as the governor hates the new chairman, that just has to be a good thing! Now the govvernor has to do things properly and is being made to look stupid because he doesn't know his own rules!

Re: Weak local.

In Iowa the union is AFSCME. Iowa Council 61 is fairly strong and the local that covers my institution is very strong. I was a steward for several years and on the eboard for 5yrs.
Disclamer: I have not been a member for 11 yrs due to being supervisory now. But I still have a pretty good view of the activity.
Like many comments I have read......our local had some problems a few yrs back. The Pres & Vice had been in office for close to 10 yrs The Secretary had been in office for close to 20 yrs. The vice pres was on the council eboard for yrs. Rank & file thought they didn't like the way the officers did things so the evening shift staged a coup.............Showed up for elections and elected almost a complete new eboard......That was 5 yrs ago....nothing changed...........they found out how much time was involved and the fact that most issues had already been decided in years past thus there wasn't much to be done and decided NOT to run for re-election...........The old VP is now back on the eboard....and a steward again.............
We actually have pretty good luck in arbritration................over the years it averages out to a 50/50 split on who wins..................Most greivences don't make it that far because the union and warden do talk...and reason most things out.
The big thing in Iowa is wage issuses.....that alone makes it worth while to remain in the union (I would be a member if I could)
